Gametes are produced by meiosis, which is a type of cell division. In meiosis, the chromosome number is reduced by half, from two copies per cell, to one copy per cell. The process of meiosis begins with the duplication of chromosomes, followed by two rounds of cell division. In the first round of division, the chromosomes are divided equally between the two daughter cells. The cortex is composed of cuboidal epithelial cells and the stroma is composed of fibrous connective tissue. The follicles are arranged in a radial pattern and the stroma is arranged in a concentric pattern. The follicles are surrounded by the zona pellucida and the stroma is surrounded by the tunica albuginea.
