They are composed of smaller molecules called amino acids, and the sequence of amino acids in a protein determines its specific function. There are 20 different amino acids that can be incorporated into a protein, and each one has a unique three-letter abbreviation.<\/p>\n<p>Most proteins are constructed from just a small number of these amino acids, and the sequence of these amino acids is determined by the sequence of codons in the gene that encodes the protein. A codon is a three-letter sequence of DNA that codes for a particular amino acid. The genetic code is the sequence of codons in a gene and the sequence of amino acids in a protein.<\/p>\n<p>The genetic code is universal, which means that it is the same for all species. The code is also redundant, which means that there are multiple codons that code for the same amino acid.
