The word is used mainly in the context of birds, but can also be used in the context of reptiles, amphibians, and fish. In birds, moulting is the periodic replacement of feathers by new feathers. Feathers are replaced once or twice a year in many birds, depending on the species.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Moulting_in_Birds\"><\/span>Moulting in Birds<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Moulting is the process of shedding or dropping the external skeleton, which is then replaced by a new one. It usually occurs in animals that grow continuously, such as amphibians, reptiles, and birds.<\/p>\n<p>In birds, moulting occurs in two stages. The first stage, called pre-moult, starts with the loss of the old feathers. This is followed by a period of growth, during which the new feathers grow. The second stage, called post-moult, starts with the loss of the new feathers, and is followed by a period of growth, during which the old feathers grow back.<\/p>\n<p>Birds usually moult in the autumn, when there is plenty of food available.
