Viroid genomes composed of a single stranded RNA molecule, and range in size from 240 to 400 nucleotides. It highly structured, and contain a number of conserved sequence elements that are essential for viroid replication. Viroid RNAs not translated into proteins, but instead thought to interact with host proteins to form replication complexes. Thought to mediated by host enzymes, and viroid sequences not found in the host genome.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Viroid_Diseases\"><\/span>Viroid Diseases<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A viroid is a small, non-coding, circular RNA molecule that is not essential for life, but can cause serious disease in plants. Viroids parasites of the plant kingdom and the smallest known self-replicating RNAs. They are naked, that is, they lack a protein coat. Viroids highly infectious and can spread by contact with sap or other plant fluids, or by tools or clothing that have in contact with infected plants.<\/p>\n<p>There are several different types of viroid diseases, each caused by a different viroid species. The most common viroid diseases are potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTVd), which affects potatoes and other Solanaceous plants, and apple proliferation viroid (APVd), which affects apples and other Malus species. Other viroid diseases include tomato yellow leaf curl viroid (TYLCVd), which affects tomatoes and other Solanaceous plants, almond leaf scorch viroid (ALSVd), which affects almonds and other Prunus species, and grapevine fanleaf virus (GFLV), which affects grapes and other Vitis species.<\/p>\n<p>Viroid diseases cause a variety of symptoms, depending on the plant species affected. Symptoms of viroid disease include stunted growth, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chlorosis\">chlorosis<\/a> (yellowing of the leaves), leaf curling, and death of the plant. In severe cases, viroid diseases can kill an entire crop of plants. Viroids spread through contact with plant sap, which can occur when a plant pruned, harvested, or damaged in any way.
