In the preparation of p-nitroacetanilide, the nitro group is displaced by acetanilide, an amide. The reaction is carried out in the presence of a strong base, such as sodium hydroxide, to provide a nucleophile to displace the nitro group. The reaction mixture is then cooled to room temperature and filtered.
