They are called “noble” because they are very stable, reluctant to react with other elements.

The physical and chemical properties of the noble gases are very similar. They are all colorless, odorless, and non-toxic. They are all monatomic gases, meaning that they exist as single atoms, not molecules. They are all very good insulators, meaning that they do not conduct electricity or heat well.

The most important property of the noble gases is their low reactivity. They do not react with other elements to form compounds. The only exception is helium, which reacts with fluorine to form helium fluorine (HeF2).

Electronic Configuration of Zero Group Elements

In chemistry, the zero group elements are the elements in the first row of the periodic table that have no electrons in their outermost shells. These elements are hydrogen, helium, lithium, beryllium, and boron.

The electronic configuration of these elements is simple. For hydrogen, the electron configuration is 1s1. For helium, it is 1s2. For lithium, it is 1s2 2s1. For beryllium, it is 1s2 2s2. For boron, it is 1s2 2s2 3s1.

The outermost shell of an atom is the shell that contains the electrons that are farthest from the nucleus. The first row of the periodic table consists of elements that have one, two, three, four, and five electrons in their outermost shells, respectively.

The zero group elements have no electrons in their outermost shells, so they do not have any electrons that are farthest from the nucleus.
