Resistance training is a key strategy for reversing or slowing the progression of sarcopenia. Obesity is also a major public health concern, and is often associated with a decline in muscle mass and strength. There is a lack of research on the effects of resistance training on body composition and skeletal muscle strength in overweight and obese postmenopausal women.<\/p>\n<p>Methods<\/p>\n<p>Forty-eight overweight and obese postmenopausal women were randomly assigned to a resistance training group or a control group. The resistance training group completed a 12-week resistance training program, three times per week. The control group did not participate in any resistance training. Body composition and skeletal muscle strength were assessed before and after the intervention.<\/p>\n<p>Results<\/p>\n<p>The resistance training group had a significant decrease in body weight (-2.9 kg), body fat percentage (-2.8%), and waist circumference (-4.2 cm). The group also had a significant increase in skeletal muscle strength (10.9 kg) and lean body mass (1.4 kg).
