The rest of the energy is radiated out into space.<\/p>\n<p>The greenhouse effect is important because it helps to keep the earth&#8217;s temperature within a range that is hospitable for life. Without the greenhouse effect, the earth would be much colder and less hospitable.<\/p>\n<p>However, the greenhouse effect can also have negative consequences. The most significant of these is global warming. Global warming is the gradual increase in the average temperature of the earth&#8217;s atmosphere. This increase is caused by the increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>Greenhouse gases are gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect. The most important of these gases is carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere when fossil fuels are burned. Other greenhouse gases include methane and nitrous oxide.<\/p>\n<p>The increase in greenhouse gases is causing the earth&#8217;s atmosphere to warm. They include the following:<\/p>\n<p>* The melting of the ice caps and glaciers, which will cause sea levels to rise and flood coastal areas.<\/p>\n<p>* The increased intensity of storms and hurricanes.<\/p>\n<p>* The increased frequency of drought.<\/p>\n<p>* The displacement of plant and animal species.<\/p>\n<p>* The increased spread of tropical diseases.<\/p>\n<p>* The increased spread of wildfires.<\/p>\n<p>* The increased spread of pests and diseases.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_the_Greenhouse_Effect\"><\/span>What is the Greenhouse Effect?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The greenhouse effect is the name given to the process where gases in the Earth&#8217;s atmosphere trap energy from the sun. This trapped energy makes the Earth&#8217;s atmosphere warm, and this is what we call the greenhouse effect. Without the greenhouse effect, the Earth would be about 33 degrees Celsius colder than it is now.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Greenhouse_Gases\"><\/span>Greenhouse Gases<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Greenhouse gases are gases that trap energy from the sun in the Earth&#8217;s atmosphere.
