It is more important to living organisms because it is responsible for transporting water into and out of cells. Diffusion is important for transporting nutrients and other molecules into and out of cells.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Osmosis\"><\/span>Osmosis<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>is the diffusion of water molecules across a selectively permeable membrane from a region of high water concentration to a region of low water concentration.<\/p>\n<p>In osmosis, water molecules move from an area of high water concentration to an area of low water concentration. This occurs because the water molecules are moving down their concentration gradient. In other words, the water molecules are moving from an area where there is a lot of water to an area where there is less water.<\/p>\n<p>The water molecules move through a selectively permeable membrane. This means that the water molecules can move through the membrane, but the other molecules (including salt molecules) cannot. This is because the selectively permeable membrane has tiny pores that only allow the water molecules to pass through.<\/p>\n<p>The water molecules move until the concentration of water is the same on both sides of the membrane. When this happens, the water molecules will stop moving.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Examples_of_osmosis\"><\/span>Examples of osmosis<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>One example of osmosis is when a person drinks a sports drink to replenish fluids lost during exercise. The drink has a higher concentration of sugar and electrolytes than the person&#8217;s blood, so water moves from the person&#8217;s blood into the drink to equalize the concentrations.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Diffusion\"><\/span>Diffusion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Diffusion is the process that moves molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. The molecules will continue to move until the concentration is equal on both sides. Diffusion is a physical process that does not require energy.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Types_of_Diffusion\"><\/span>Types of Diffusion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are three types of diffusion:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Brownian diffusion: This type of diffusion is named after the scientist who first observed it, Robert Brown. Brownian diffusion is the random movement of particles in a fluid.<\/li>\n<li>Fickian diffusion: This type of diffusion is named after the scientist who first described it, August Fick. Fickian diffusion is the diffusion of molecules through a membrane.<\/li>\n<li>Non-Fickian diffusion: This type of diffusion is not named after any specific scientist.
