These equations are usually represented in mathematical notation using letters to represent unknown quantities and using a plus or minus sign to indicate whether a quantity is to be added to or subtracted from another.<\/p>\n<p>A typical linear equation might look something like this:<\/p>\n<p>x + 2y = 3<\/p>\n<p>This equation says that the sum of x and 2y is equal to 3. In other words, if we add 2y to x we will get 3.<\/p>\n<p>Linear equations can be solved by using a technique called substitution. This technique involves solving one of the equations for one of the variables and then substituting that value into the other equation. For example, suppose we wanted to solve the equation x + 2y = 3 for y.
