Cells in the body can be divided into two categories: somatic cells and germ cells. Somatic cells are all the cells in the body that are not germ cells. Germ cells are the cells in the body that produce eggs or sperm.<\/p>\n<p>Differentiation begins when a cell is first formed from a fertilized egg. The cell starts out as a stem cell, which is a cell that has not yet specialized. Stem cells can become any type of cell in the body. They can become skin cells, muscle cells, or any other type of cell.<\/p>\n<p>Differentiation occurs as the stem cell divides. The daughter cells become more specialized as they divide. The process of differentiation is controlled by genes. Genes are the instructions that control the development of a cell.<\/p>\n<p>Different cells in the body have different genes turned on or off. This is what controls the differentiation of the cells. As the cells become more specialized, they lose some of the abilities of the stem cell. Stem cells can become any type of cell in the body, but once a cell becomes specialized, it can only become one type of cell.<\/p>\n<p>Differentiation is a process that occurs throughout life. New cells are constantly being formed as the body grows and replaces old cells.
