It states that the mass of a gas that dissolves in a given mass of a solvent at any temperature is proportional to the pressure of the gas above the surface of the solvent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/infinitylearn.com\/surge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/31936817414_60dde3e03b_o.png\" alt=\"equilibrium-cbse-notes-for-class-11-chemistry-7\" width=\"471\" height=\"48\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>\u2022 Characteristics of Equilibria Involving Physical Processes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(i) The equilibrium can be attained only in closed systems at a given temperature.<br \/>\n(ii) At the equilibrium the measurable properties of the system remain constant.<br \/>\n(iii) The equilibrium is dynamic since both the forward and backward processes occur at the same rate.<br \/>\n(iv) At equilibrium, the concentrations of substances become constant at a constant temperature.<br \/>\n(v) The value of the equilibrium constant represents the extent to which the process proceeds before equilibrium is achieved.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Equilibrium in Chemical Processes <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Like equilibria in physical systems, it can also be achieved in a chemical process involving reversible chemical reactions carried in a closed container.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/infinitylearn.com\/surge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/31965894163_2c72026e04_o.png\" alt=\"equilibrium-cbse-notes-for-class-11-chemistry-8\" width=\"332\" height=\"23\" \/><br \/>\nThe dynamic nature of chemical equilibrium can be demonstrated in the synthesis of ammonia by Haber\u2019s process. Haber started his experiment with the known amounts of N2 and H2 at high temperatures and pressure. At regular intervals of time, he determined the amount of ammonia present. He also found out the concentration of unreacted N2 and H2.<br \/>\nAfter a certain time, he found that the composition of the mixture remains the same even though some of the reactants are still present. This constancy indicates the attainment of equilibrium. Let us consider the reaction,<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/infinitylearn.com\/surge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/31965893813_ee41eeb7d7_o.png\" alt=\"equilibrium-cbse-notes-for-class-11-chemistry-13\" width=\"736\" height=\"608\" \/><br \/>\n\u2022 Relationship between Equilibrium constant K, reaction Quotient Q and Gibbs energy G.<br \/>\nA mathematical expression of the thermodynamic view of equilibrium can be described by the tine equation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/infinitylearn.com\/surge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/31936816524_5b5a2d91ea_o.png\" alt=\"equilibrium-cbse-notes-for-class-11-chemistry-14\" width=\"463\" height=\"154\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/infinitylearn.com\/surge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/31965893383_9dbaa1a71d_o.png\" alt=\"equilibrium-cbse-notes-for-class-11-chemistry-15\" width=\"357\" height=\"108\" \/><strong>Factors Affecting Equilibria<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Le Chatelier\u2019s principle:<\/strong> If a system under equilibrium is subjected to a change in temperature, pressure or concentration, then the equilibrium shifts in such a manner as to reduce or to counteract the effect of change.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Effect of Change of Concentration:<\/strong> When the concentration of any of the reactants or products in a reaction at equilibrium is changed, the composition of the equilibrium changes to minimise the effect.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Effect of Pressure Change<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>If the number of moles of gaseous reactants and products is equal, there is no effect of pressure.<\/li>\n<li>When the total number of moles of gaseous reactants and a total number of moles of gaseous products are different.<\/li>\n<li>On increasing pressure, the total number of moles per unit volume increases, thus the equilibrium will shift in direction in which several moles per unit volume will be less.<\/li>\n<li>If the total number of moles of products is more than the total number of moles of reactants, low pressure will favour forward reaction.<\/li>\n<li>If the total number of moles of reactants is more than the total number of moles of products, high pressure is favourable to forward reaction.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Effect of Inert Gas Addition<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If the volume is kept constant there is no effect on equilibrium after the addition of inert gas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reason:<\/strong> This is because the addition of inert gas at constant volume does not change the partial pressure or the molar concentration.<br \/>\nThe reaction quotient changes only if the added gas is involved in the reaction.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Effect of Temperature Change<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When the temperature of the system is changed (increased or decreased), the equilibrium shifts in the opposite direction to neutralize the effect of change. An exothermic reaction, low temperature favours forward reaction e.g.,<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/infinitylearn.com\/surge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/31936816194_855dd1b929_o.png\" alt=\"equilibrium-cbse-notes-for-class-11-chemistry-16\" width=\"303\" height=\"45\" \/><br \/>\nbut practically very low temperature slows down the reaction and thus a catalyst is used. In the case of an endothermic reaction, the increase in temperature will shift the equilibrium in the direction of the endothermic reaction.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Effect of a Catalyst<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Catalyst does not affect the equilibrium composition of a reaction mixture.<\/p>\n<p>Reason: Since catalyst increases the speed of both the forward and backward reactions to the same extent in a reversible reaction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ionic Equilibrium in Solution<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Electrolytes:<\/strong> Substances that conduct electricity in their aqueous solution.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strong Electrolytes:<\/strong> Those electrolytes which on dissolution in water are ionized almost completely are called strong electrolytes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Weak electrolyte:<\/strong> Those electrolytes which on dissolution in water partially dissociated are called a weak electrolytes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ionic Equilibrium:<\/strong> The equilibrium formed between ions and unionised substance is called ionic equilibrium, e.g.,<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/infinitylearn.com\/surge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/31965893093_82583355a4_o.png\" alt=\"equilibrium-cbse-notes-for-class-11-chemistry-17\" width=\"341\" height=\"33\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>Acids:<\/strong> Acids are the substances that turn blue litmus paper to red and liberate dihydrogen by reacting with some metals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bases:<\/strong> Bases are the substances that turn red litmus paper blue. Common Example: NaOH, Na<sub>2<\/sub>C0<sub>3<\/sub>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 Arrhenius Concept of Acids and Bases<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Acids:<\/strong> According to Arrhenius theory, acids are substances that dissociate in water to give hydrogen ions H<sup>+<\/sup>(aq).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bases:<\/strong> Bases are substances that produce OH<sup>\u2013<\/sup>(aq) after dissociation in water.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/infinitylearn.com\/surge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/32780010385_9fa17c3338_o.png\" alt=\"equilibrium-cbse-notes-for-class-11-chemistry-18\" width=\"451\" height=\"126\" \/><strong>Limitations of the Arrhenius Concept<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(i) According to the Arrhenius concept, an acid gives H<sup>+<\/sup> ions in water but the H+ ions do not exist independently because of its very small size (~H<sup>-18<\/sup> m radius) and intense electric field.<\/p>\n<p>(ii) It does not account for the basicity of substances like ammonia which does not possess a hydroxyl group.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Bronsted-Lowry Acids and Bases<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to Bronsted-Lowry, an acid is a substance that is capable of donating a hydrogen ion H<sup>+<\/sup> and bases are substances capable of accepting a hydrogen ion H<sup>+<\/sup>.<br \/>\nIn other words, acids are proton donors and bases are proton acceptors. Similarly, H<sub>2<\/sub>0 is the conjugate base of an acid H<sub>3<\/sub>0<sup>+<\/sup> and H<sub>3<\/sub>0<sup>+<\/sup> is the conjugate acid of base H<sub>2<\/sub>O.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lewis Acids and Bases<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to Lewis, acid is a substance that accepts an electron pair and base is a substance with donates an electron pair.<\/p>\n<p>Electron deficient species like AlCl<sub>3<\/sub>, BH<sub>3<\/sub>, H<sup>+<\/sup> etc. can act as Lewis acids while species like H<sub>2<\/sub>0, NH<sub>3<\/sub> etc. can donate a pair of electrons, can act as Lewis bases.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ionization of Acids and Bases<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The strength of acid or base is determined with the help of the extent of ionization in an aqueous solution.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>pH Scale:<\/strong> Hydrogen-ion concentration is measured as the number of gram ions of hydrogen ions present per litre of solution.
