Electric Charge<\/strong> Charge is the property associated with matter due to which it produces and experiences electric and magnetic effect.<br \/>\n<strong>2. Conductors and Insulators<\/strong> Those substances which readily allow the passage of electricity through them are called conductors, e.g. metals, the earth and those substances which offer high resistance to the passage of electricity are called insulators, e.g. plastic rod and nylon.<br \/>\n<strong>3. Transference of electrons<\/strong> is the cause of frictional electricity.<br \/>\n<strong>4. Additivity of Charges<\/strong> Charges are scalars and they add up like real numbers. It means if a system consists of n charges q<sub>1<\/sub>, q<sub>2<\/sub>, q<sub>3<\/sub> , \u2026 ,q<sub>n<\/sub>, then total charge of the system will be q<sub>1<\/sub> +q<sub>2<\/sub> + \u2026 +q<sub>n<\/sub>.<br \/>\n<strong>5. Conservation of Charge<\/strong> The total charge of an isolated system is always conserved, i.e. initial and final charge of the system will be same.<br \/>\n<strong>6. Quantisation of Charge<\/strong> Charge exists in discrete amount rather than continuous value and hence, quantised.<br \/>\nMathematically, charge on an object, q=\u00b1ne<br \/>\nwhere, n is an integer and e is electronic charge. When any physical quantity exists in discrete packets rather than in continuous amount, the quantity is said to be quantised. Hence, charge is quantised.<br \/>\n<strong>7. Units of Charge<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> (i) SI unit coulomb (C)<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> (ii) CGS system<\/strong><br \/>\n(a) electrostatic unit, esu of charge or stat-coulomb (stat-C)<br \/>\n(b) electromagnetic unit, emu of charge or ab-C (ab-coulomb)<br \/>\n1 ab-C = 10 C, 1 C = 3 x 10<sup>9<\/sup> stat-C<br \/>\n<strong>8. Coulomb\u2019s Law<\/strong> It states that the electrostatic force of interaction or repulsion acting between two stationary point charges is given by<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/infinitylearn.com\/surge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/31985878883_7dcf950030_o.png\" alt=\"electric-charges-and-fields-cbse-notes-for-class-12-physics-1\" width=\"683\" height=\"482\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>9. Electrostatic forces<\/strong> (Coulombian forces) are conservative forces.<br \/>\n<strong>10. Electrostatic Force due to Continuous Charge Distribution<\/strong><br \/>\nThe region in which charges are closely spaced is said to have continuous distribution of charge. Electric Field Intensity<\/strong> The electric field intensity at any point due to source charge is defined as the force experienced per unit positive test charge placed at that point without disturbing the source charge. Electric Field Lines<\/strong> Electric field lines are a way of pictorially mapping the electric field around a configuration of charge(s). These lines start on positive charge and end on negative charge. The tangent on these lines at any point gives the direction of field at that point.<br \/>\n<strong>16. Net force<\/strong> on electric dipole placed in a uniform electric field is zero.<br \/>\n<strong>26.<\/strong> There exists a net force and torque on electric dipole when placed in non-uniform electric field.<br \/>\n<strong>27. Work done<\/strong> in rotating the electric dipole from \u03b8<sub>1<\/sub> to \u03b8<sub>2<\/sub> is W = pE (cos \u03b8<sub>1<\/sub> \u2013 cos \u03b8<sub>2<\/sub>)<br \/>\n<strong>28. Potential energy of electric dipole<\/strong> when it rotates from \u03b8<sub>1<\/sub> = 90\u00b0 to \u03b8<sub>2<\/sub> =0<br \/>\nU = pE (cos 90\u00b0 \u2013 cos\u03b8) = -pE cos \u03b8 = \u2013 p .E<br \/>\n29. Work done in rotating the dipole from the position of stable equilibrium to unstable equilibrium, i.e. when \u03b8<sub>1<\/sub> = 0\u00b0 and \u03b8<sub>2<\/sub> = \u03c0.<br \/>\nW = 2 pE<br \/>\n<strong>30.
