means how fast plants make new stuff. Photosynthesis is the main way this happens, turning things like carbon dioxide and water into organic material. There are two main parts to primary productivity:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Gross primary productivity:<\/strong> This is the total amount of organic material made by plants through photosynthesis. It depends on how much sunlight there is and other factors.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Net primary productivity:<\/strong> This is what&#8217;s left over after plants use some of the energy they make for themselves. It&#8217;s what animals can eat. We calculate it by subtracting what plants use from what they make.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>So, net primary productivity is like the energy left over for other living things after plants have used some for themselves.
