My speech\u2019s topic is <em>The Pen is Mightier than the Sword<\/em>. Needless to say, it\u2019s a very popular phrase. We all know that sword is a very powerful weapon and can give enormous power to the person holding it. It is so powerful that with this you can even make people bow down to you and establish your supremacy.<\/p>\n<p>However, you can enslave a person physically, but cannot enslave his mind and heart for that matter. This power lies with the pen. Pen even though small in size is known to be more powerful than the sword. Through sword, you enslave people against their will and this cannot last for long as one day your supremacy will meet its doom by the forces of vengeance.<\/p>\n<p>Does history not give us enough proof to make us realize that the military glory of Alexander the Great, Napoleon Bonaparte and Hitler, to name a few was short lived and easily passed into oblivion. On the contrary, the teachings and sayings of the great writers as well as philosophers are remembered by the people till eternity. It doesn\u2019t die down and has a lasting impact. In fact, philosophers, writers, poets and scientists never die, but live in our hearts forever through their exemplary works.<\/p>\n<p>Long-lasting empires cannot be built through swords, but through the power of pen. The powerful ideas of many great philosophers and intellectuals have been known to smash dictatorship and monarchy in various parts of the world. It is the writers\u2019 pen that has encouraged our youth to strike back against injustice and give a tough fight to the corrupt authority.<\/p>\n<p>Powerful thoughts that flowed down from the writer\u2019s pen helped man to emerge from the barbaric phase. The ability of a man is to pin down his thoughts on a piece of paper. What makes human beings superior in comparison with animals? It is not their physical prowess, but their mental faculty and the way they think differently. Therefore, it\u2019s not the sword, but the pen, from which powerful thoughts flow down and makes man superior than the other being on this earth.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, in the end all I would want to say that violence never ever helps and the less violence is encouraged, the better our place will become on this earth. So the pen is indeed mightier than the sword because what can be achieved through language and thoughts cannot be achieved through violence and power of persuasion is much more effective than the unleashing of violence. Also, please allow me to introduce our very special guests of honor, i.e. Shobhaa De and Vikram Seth in our today\u2019s congregation.<\/p>\n<p>My happiness knows no bounds in the presence of such phenomenal writers and of course such a great audience. Before we begin with the workshop, I would like to deliver a speech on a very pertinent topic that would be apt for today\u2019s occasion, i.e. <em>The Pen is Mightier than the Sword<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I am sure everyone present here must be familiar with this axiom. Aren\u2019t you? But I would like to take a step forward and explain what it signifies on a deeper level and why it is important in the present violent world to unleash the power of words. From the ancient times, the sword has always been the weapon of the most powerful and an important part in shaping history. People applaud its gallantry and success that it brings in battlegrounds. But it also results in a wild massacre and bloodbath. It doesn\u2019t create, but disrupt and brings life to an end.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, if we look at the pen, it may look very small, but its inherent power is much stronger than the sword. Apparently, you cannot fathom its deep hidden power, but when you start using it in order to move the world according to your opinion then you realize its true hidden potential. Pen, therefore, has been working in oblivion and bringing in greater rewards and of course success than the sword could ever bring.<\/p>\n<p>The proverb clearly breaks the illusion of associating prowess with the sword and affirms that it is actually the art of writing which finally triumphs.<\/p>\n<p>The proverb commemorates the art of writing and points out the fact that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Writers wield greater power in comparison to the mighty warriors;<\/li>\n<li>Mighty warriors cannot build a strong empire through the power of sword, but great writers do with their powerful combination of words.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Such type of writing could come in various forms, such as it can be factual, creative, social, political, inspirational, economical, theatrical, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s understand in a little more detail, the implication of this proverb:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Brings Consensus in Disputes \u2013 Words, if used wisely, can settle disputes and establish peace.<\/li>\n<li>Gives Enjoyment \u2013 Literature gives more pleasure than fighting does.<\/li>\n<li>Civilization \u2013 Civilized behaviour is anytime preferred over barbaric force.<\/li>\n<li>Persuasion \u2013 Writing is believed to be more persuasive than physical strength is.<\/li>\n<li>Political Action \u2013 The act of writing or creative wisdom lead a positive and stronger impact on society than of course violence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Therefore, we should completely shun the path of violence and adopt a more friendly approach. We should try to win the hearts of people or convince them through our art of writing or by adopting a positive approach. We should never get influenced by the ephemeral grandeur of the sword. Make use of the power of mighty pen and accomplish never-ending victories of the soul. Also, I would like to thank you all for taking time out of your busy schedule and gracing this ceremony with your presence.<\/p>\n<p>Since we are here to pay tribute to all our great Indian writers and poets, there is a strong urge within me to deliver a succinct speech on the very famous saying: <em>The Pen is Mightier than the Sword. <\/em>Though I am sure everyone knows its meaning, but very few must have devoted a considerable amount of thought to it.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the moment we imagine a pen we tend to link it with nothing, but the act of writing. How well it writes and whether it is smooth on the paper or not. But that\u2019s the technical side! If we think artistically, it helps one to write or record his feelings on a piece of paper. Sword, on the other hand, is a weapon used for destruction. It can be used only by warriors or those who have learnt the art of using it. But anyone can use a pen \u2013 whether it\u2019s a child, grownup or even old people. If one is a writer, then he\/she can use the pen to bring the desired result and influence his\/her audience. In fact, many great writers have brought revolution in society. For instance, the French Revolution was the outcome of the writings of the great French writers, such as Rousseau.<\/p>\n<p>Words have the power to evoke several emotions, such as love, sympathy, hatred, anger, etc. Thus, the act of writing is very powerful in its own way and must be looked up with respect and awe. This is the reason why it is said that the pen is mightier than the sword. In addition, below are five principal reasons in support of this proverb:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>It appeals more to our rational faculty <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Human beings are rational creatures and therefore a reasoned debate appeals more to their rational faculty rather than the acts of violence.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Lifelong <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>A well-written book or thoughtfully articulated philosophical treatises last for many ages to come and continue to influence generation after generation. On the contrary, any brutal incident doesn\u2019t take much time to fizzle out and if at all is remembered, it is only in a negative light enough to meet people\u2019s condemnation.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Accomplishment <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I am sure you all will agree to the fact that violence does no good to people or humanity at large, but a great work of art certainly does. Words have the power of persuasion without any force or compulsion and with this you can urge people to condemn violence and adopt the path of non-violence. This is a great achievement in itself for the writers who can influence people in a positive manner and leave their imprints behind for people to follow. Yes, ladies and gentleman you heard it right! After all, there is a great saying that the pen is mightier than the sword and it is mightier in all respects. The power that a pen holds is enormous when compared to a sword. Besides, the impact of a pen is far-reaching and huge whereas the impact of a sword is short-lived. This is the reason why it is said that what a pen can achieve cannot be achieved with the pointed edge of a sword. It is the tiny tip of the pen, which leads to all the wonders and ink acts as the medium.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, this saying that the pen is mightier than the sword suggests the writing power. And this power is so magical that it can make the world follow you and transform the feeling of hatred into love, fight into friendship and war into peace.<\/p>\n<p>I hope you all remember those timeless stories that our grandparents used to tell us and the kind of impact those stories have had on us in our growing years. We still cherish those stories and remember the lessons derived from them. Therefore, stories and great books never die and remain timeless. After all, you can forget a war, but never an excellent story. Wars only bring destruction and annihilation of human race whereas a book both teaches and delights. All this clearly supports the fact that the pen is indeed mightier than the sword.<\/p>\n<p>Books allows us free thinking and never bind us whereas war not only destroys, but also lead to the enslavement of the weak people and poverty as well as deprivation. Whereas wars destroy, books construct. Books help us become fearless and develop individuality, on the other hand war create fear in everyone. One cannot accomplish anything through war, but a complete annihilation of countries, culture and humanity while books act as a medium to see the world through different eyes and explore various places, countries and islands without actually going anywhere.<\/p>\n<p>A great writer possesses immense power within himself\/herself as he\/she can transform the world, wipe off evil and help the world progress. The history has it that there have been phenomenal writers who not only had a charismatic personality, but were also great reformers. Please allow me to mention a few of them, viz. Mahatma Gandhi, Swami Vivekananda, John Keats, Adam Smith, Machiavelli, Plato, maxim Gorky, Thomas Paine, Marx, Stewart Mill, etc.<\/p>\n<p>So believe in creative power rather than violence and encourage people around you to adopt non-violent methods and help restore peace on this earth. There is nothing that a great work cannot achieve. If you have the knack to be a writer then you must come forward and share your thoughts through writing just like our journalists and other writers do.
