Its main role is to regulate the homeostasis of two essential mineral ions: sodium ions (Na+) and potassium ions (K+). Aldosterone helps adjust blood pressure and blood volume by influencing the reabsorption of these ions in the kidneys.<\/p>\n<p>The secretion of aldosterone is controlled by the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone (RAAS) pathway. Among these, cortisol is the most abundant and plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism and the body&#8217;s response to stress.<\/p>\n<p>The effects of glucocorticoids can be summarised as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Protein breakdown:<\/strong> Glucocorticoids increase protein breakdown in muscle fibers, releasing amino acids into the bloodstream, which can be used for protein synthesis or ATP production.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Glucose formation:<\/strong> Glucocorticoids stimulate the liver to convert certain substances like amino acids or lactic acid into glucose through gluconeogenesis, providing an additional source of ATP for cells.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lipolysis:<\/strong> Glucocorticoids promote lipolysis, breaking down triglycerides and releasing fatty acids from adipose <a href=\"https:\/\/infinitylearn.com\/surge\/articles\/tissue\/\"><strong>tissue<\/strong> <\/a>into the blood.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Resistance to stress:<\/strong> Glucocorticoids provide resistance to various stresses by supplying tissues with glucose for energy during exercise, fasting, or other stressors.
