The strip is straight at room temperature.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/infinitylearn.com\/surge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/30926544260_63839fbbf2_o.png\" alt=\"to-observe-and-explain-the-effect-of-heating-on-a-bi-metallic-strip-1\" width=\"303\" height=\"189\" \/><br \/>\nWhen the bi-metallic strip is heated both bars expand differently. Since they are ripetted at their ends, their ends stay together. The bi-metallic strip bends keeping more expanding bar on its convex side. More is heating, more is the bending.<br \/>\nIn case of an iron-brass bi-metallic strip, the bent strip will have brass bar on its convex side.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Theory <\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/infinitylearn.com\/surge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/31179615611_157cef6e84_o.png\" alt=\"to-observe-and-explain-the-effect-of-heating-on-a-bi-metallic-strip-2\" width=\"884\" height=\"92\" \/><br \/>\nIf two rods of different metals have same length L<sub>1 <\/sub> at temperature t<sub>1<\/sub>\u00b0C, their length at higher temperature t<sub>2 <\/sub>\u00b0C will be different. The rod of a metal having more value of \u2018 coefficient of linear expansion will have more length than the other rod.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Diagram <\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/infinitylearn.com\/surge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/30926544140_52e4e9f41e_o.png\" alt=\"to-observe-and-explain-the-effect-of-heating-on-a-bi-metallic-strip-3\" width=\"594\" height=\"418\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Procedure<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Clamp one end of the brass-iron bi-metallic strip, keeping brass bar on the lower side.<\/li>\n<li>Keep the strip horizontal rested on a vertical support.<\/li>\n<li>Fix a vertical scale near the free end of the bi-metallic strip.<\/li>\n<li>Suspend a thermometer with its bulb touching the strip in the middle.<\/li>\n<li>Note the initial temperature of the strip.<\/li>\n<li>Note the vertical scale division coinciding with the upper edge of the strip.<\/li>\n<li>Heat the strip by passing electric current through it or by using a burner. The thermometer will show a rise of temperature.<\/li>\n<li>Watch the movement of the free end of the strip. The strip bends upwards (towards iron bar side) and position of upper edge of the strip changes.<\/li>\n<li>Note the temperature after each rise of temperature by 2\u00b0C and also the position of the upper edge at that temperature.<\/li>\n<li>Record your observations as given below.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Observations <\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nRoom temperature = 30\u00b0C (say)<br \/>\nLeast count of vertical scale = 1 mm.<br \/>\nTable for temperature and vertical scale reading<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/infinitylearn.com\/surge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/31150494532_d3a635529f_o.png\" alt=\"to-observe-and-explain-the-effect-of-heating-on-a-bi-metallic-strip-4\" width=\"855\" height=\"298\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Calculations<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Find the amount of bending by taking difference of position with initial position.<\/li>\n<li>It is found that amount of bending increases as temperature rises.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Result <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Bi-metallic strip bends more and more as its temperature rises.<\/li>\n<li>Since brass bar is on convex side and iron bar on concave side of bent bi-metallic strip, brass bar expands more than the iron bar.
