Iodine liberated at once reacts with sodium<br \/>\nthiosulphate solution and is reduced to iodide ions<br \/>\nI<sub>2<\/sub>+ 2S<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>3<\/sub><sup>2-<\/sup> \u2014fast\u2014&gt; S<sub>8<\/sub>O<sub>6<\/sub><sup>2-<\/sup>  + 2I<sup>\u2013<\/sup><br \/>\nWhen thiosulphate ions are completely consumed, the liberated iodine reacts with starch solution and gives blue colour<br \/>\nI<sub>2<\/sub> + Starch \u2014\u2014-&gt; Blue complex<br \/>\nThe time elapsed before the appearance of blue colour, gives an idea about the rate of the reaction.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Apparatus and Chemicals<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n4 Conical flasks (250 ml), measuring cylinder, burette, pipette (25 ml), stop-watch, 0.1 M KI t solution, 2.5 M H<sub>2<\/sub>S0<sub>4<\/sub>, starch solution. \u20183%\u2019 H<sub>2<\/sub>0<sub>2<\/sub> solution, 0.05 M sodium thiosulphate solution.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Procedure<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Take four 250 ml conical flasks and label them as A, B, C and D.<\/li>\n<li>Add 10 ml, 20 ml, 40 ml and 60 ml of 0.1 M KI solution to the flasks A, B, C and D respectively.<\/li>\n<li>Add 10 ml of to each flask.<\/li>\n<li>Add water to make the volume of solution 100 ml in each flask.<\/li>\n<li>Add 5 ml starch solution to each flask.<\/li>\n<li>Add 10 ml of 0.05 M sodium thiosulphate solution to each flask.<\/li>\n<li>Add 5 ml of 3% hydrogen peroxide solution to flask A with the help of a pipette and start the stop watch immediately. Stir the mixture and watch for the blue colour to appear.
