The chess we play today came from Europe. Chess is a two-player game. One player uses the white pieces. The other uses the black pieces. Each piece moves in a special way. One piece is called the king. Each player has one. The players take turns moving their pieces. If a player lands on a piece, he or she takes it. The game ends when a player loses his or her king. There are a few more rules, but these are the basics. The players of chess believe that it makes the mind stronger. Good chess players use their brains. They take their time. They think about what will happen next. These skills are useful in life and in chess. Chess is like a workout for the brain.

You don’t always have lots of time to think when playing chess. There is a type of chess with short time limits. It’s called blitz chess. In blitz chess, each player gets ten minutes to use for the whole game. Your clock runs during your turn. You hit the time clock after your move. This stops your clock. It also starts the other player’s clock. If you run out of time, you lose. Games of blitz chess are fast-paced.
Chess is not just for people. Computers have been playing chess since the 1970s. At first they did not play well. They made mistakes. As time went on, they grew stronger. In 1997, a computer beat the best player in the world for the first time. It was a computer called Deep Blue. Deep Blue was big. It took up a whole room. By 2006 a cell phone could beat the best players in the world. Chess has surely come a long way. Don’t you think so?

(a) Where did modem chess originate? [1]
(b) Which is the most important piece in chess? [1]
(c) How does it affect the brain? [1]
(d) What is the relationship between chess and life? [1]
(e) What is blitz chess? [1]
(f) How much time does each player get in blitz chess? [1]
(g) When did the computers start playing chess? [1]
(h) How have computer chess programmes changed over time? [1]

Question 2:
Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow : [12]
Many people in the world, especially Indians, feel proud of being vegetarians. The idea behind vegetarianism is that of ahimsa, non-violence or compassion towards all. So when you order your veggie Mac with Coke, veggie delight pizza with Pepsi, puri bhaji, shrikhand, chole batura, dal bhatti, jalebi, churma, rasgulla, etc., is there no himsa there? You are killing your own stomach. Too much food is a form of cruelty too; you are being cruel to your own stomach. So many among us cringe when we see chickens packed in stuffy carriers and goat on altars, and can’t generally stand the idea of a chicken or non-veg dish on the same table as yours; or despise people who eat non-veg. But are you being truly compassionate ? Or is your compassion reserved only for animals? Being a vegetarian is about prastising non-violence and compassion towards all, including yourself. Ahimsa is a much deeper philosophy, and not as superficial as ordering eggless pastry, or disallowing non-veg restaurants in your neighbourhood or forcing all restaurants in the neighbourhood to serve only veg food. And like everything else, this ahimsa has to start with being kind or compassionate towards yourself. If we continue to load our stomachs then all benefits of vegetarianism are lost. A stuffed stomach is in a much more pitiful condition than the chicken in the stuffy carriers going over speed breakers.

On the other hand, there are non-vegetarians who can’t stop pitying the poor vegetarians. They argue that vegetarians are deprived of meat which is so rich in proteins and great in taste. Our body s ability to digest and absorb proteins depends on our state of mind, time of the day and most importantly on how full we are feeling. So if you have binged on your favourite chicken dish thinking it’s all protein so it won’t convert to fat, you are just being hopelessly optimistic.

Veg or non-veg, whatever you choose to eat, be kind to yourself and your stomach and eat only a little at one time. Remember the golden rule : just fill half your stomach at one time. With this you will be practising ahimsa even while consuming non-veg food.
(a) Why does the writer feel that when we order our favourite veg dishes, we are not practising ahimsa? [2]
(b) Prove with an example, ahimsa is a much deeper philosophy. [2]
(c) Do you agree with non-vegetarians when they feel sorry for poor vegetarians?
