Many children, teachers, and lawyers joined the cause. Everyone came out in support of the agitation and spoke out against the British Raj. Except for Madras, the council elections were boycotted. In Madras, the Justice Party, the non-Brahman party, believed that this was their only chance to gain power, which only Brahmans had.
