The Election Commission is preparing to issue Voter IDs to Class 12 students once they are eligible to vote.
Plans are underway for school students to receive their voter cards automatically upon turning 18. The Election Commission of India is gearing up to provide Voter IDs to Class 12 students once they become eligible to vote. “We are working on a system where Class 12 students will receive their Voter IDs when they turn 18, with applications processed in advance,” stated Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar on Saturday.
The Voter ID card, issued by the Election Commission of India, is a crucial identity document for adults and is used while voting. Eligible adults can register as voters on the National Voters’ Service Portal.
In Manipur, where violence has persisted for nearly a year, displaced voters will be able to cast their ballots from their camps. “In Manipur, we have devised a plan to enable voters in camps to vote from their locations. This is akin to the scheme for migrants in Jammu and Kashmir,” stated Mr. Kumar.
The Election Commission announced that a total of 97 crore registered voters will participate in the election to elect 543 MPs in seven phases, beginning on April 19. This election will see the participation of 1.8 crore first-time voters. The votes will be counted on June 4.
In India, all citizens, regardless of their race, color, or previous condition of subjugation, have the right to vote under the Citizenship Act, which protects their rights under the 15th Amendment. Citizens deemed ineligible to vote by law due to instability, corrupt practices, or illegal election-related acts cannot vote. Non-Indian citizens cannot be registered on the electoral rolls.
After enrollment, eligible citizens receive a voter slip from the Election Commission, confirming their name on the voter list. This slip, along with a photo ID recognized by the Election Commission, serves as a voter card. If the voter slip is not received, residents can check online or call the helpline for assistance.
