Question

Arrange the halogens F2, Cl2, Br2, I2 in order of their increasing reactivity with alkanes

Easy
Solution

Reaction of F2 is so fast with alkanes that the heat produced in the reaction causes explosion. The reaction of I2 with alkane is reversible in nature and requires some oxidising agent like HgO, HIO3 etc., to consume the HI produced and forward reaction is carried out.

CH4 + I2  CH3I + HI

HIO3+5HI3I2+3H2O
