Solubility product(KSP)
Question

If Ksp of Ag2CO3 is 8×10–12, the molar solubility of Ag2CO3 in 0.1M AgNO3 is :

Moderate
Solution

Let the molar solubility of Ag2CO3 in 0.1 M AgNO3 be S' which will be less due to common ion effect

\large AgN{O_3}\left( {aq} \right)\xrightarrow{{}}\mathop {A{g^ + }\left( {aq} \right)}\limits_{0.1 + 2S} + \mathop {NO_3^ - }\limits_{0.1} \left( {aq} \right)

\large A{g_2}C{O_3}\left( {aq} \right) \rightleftharpoons \mathop {A{g_2}C{O_3}\left( {aq} \right)}\limits_{S'} \xrightarrow{{}}\mathop {2A{g^ + }\left( {aq} \right)}\limits_{2S' + 0.1} + \mathop {CO_3^{ - 2}}\limits_{S'} \left( {aq} \right)

\large {\left[ {A{g^ + }} \right]_{total}} = 2S' + 0.1\sim 0.1

\large {\left[ {A{g^ + }} \right]^2} \times \left[ {CO_3^{ - 2}} \right] = 8 \times {10^{ - 12}}

⇒ 10-2 x S' = 8 x 10-12

⇒ S' = 8 x 10-10
