Acidic buffer
Question

A solution is prepared by mixing 100 ml of 0.1M NH4OH and 200 ml of 0.2M NH4Cl. pKb of NH4OH is 4.8. Then the pH of the solution is

Moderate
Solution

The POH of a basic buffer is given as,

\large {P^{OH}} = {P^{Kb}} + \log \frac{{\left[ {Salt} \right]}}{{\left[ {Acid} \right]}}\

\large {P^{OH}} = 4.8 + \log \frac{{\frac{{200 \times 0.2}}{{300}}}}{{\frac{{100 \times 0.1}}{{300}}}}\

\large {P^{OH}} = 4.8 + \log \frac{{40}}{{10}}\

\large \begin{gathered} {P^{OH}} = 5.4 \ \\ {P^H} = 14 - 5.4 \\\ \end{gathered} \

\large {P^H} = 8.6\
