Question

A mono atomic gas at a pressure P, having a volume V, expands isothermally to a volume 2V, and then adiabatically to a volume 16 V. The final pressure of the gas is:  δ=53

Moderate
Solution

1st  Isothermal process

given initial pressure P1=P , initial volume V1 =V final pressure be P2     then volume is V2 =2V

isothermal process, relation between Pressure P,and volume V is

 1V

P1P2=V2V1---(1)

substitute given values in (1)eqn PP2=2VV

P2=P/2

2nd adiabatic process

  given final volume of the gas is V3=16V

  In adiabatic process relation between pressure P and volume V is   P2V2δ=P3V3δ

given specific heat ratio δ=53

  P2P3=V3V25/3

substitute the given and obtained values, legiblyP2P3=16V2V5/3

P2P3=25

final pressure P3=P64
