Rectilinear Motion
Question

A particle moving in a straight line covers half the distance with speed of 3 m/s. The other half of the distance is covered in two equal time intervals with speed of 4.5 m/s and 7 .5 m/s respectively. The average speed of the particle during this motion is

Difficult
Solution

If t2 and 2t2 are the time taken by particle to cover first and second half distance, respectively, then

 t1=x/23=x6                    ......(i) x1=4.5t2 and x2=7.5t2  So,  x1=x2=x24.5t2+7.5t2=x2 t2=x24                           .......(ii)  Total time t1+x2+2t2=x6+x12=x4 ALTERNATE METHOD:  AVERAGE SPEED=TOTAL DISTANCE TRAVELLEDTOTAL TIME OF TRAVEL                                 =XX/2V1+XV2+V3=2V1(V2+V3)2V1+V2+V3                                  = 4 ms-1

So,averagespeed 4m/sec
