Simple hormonic motion
Question

A student says that he had applied a force F = – k/x on a particle and the particle moved in simple harmonic motion. He refuses to tell whether r is a constant or not. Assume that he has worked only with positive x and no other force acted on the particle

Easy
Solution

For SHM F is proportional to (-x)

\Rightarrow F \propto \frac{{\left( { - {x^2}} \right)}}{x}
\Rightarrow F = \frac{{ - a{x^2}}}{x}
\Rightarrow F = - \frac{k}{x}

where k = ax2 and 'a' is a constant.

So option (1) is right.
