Glucagon is secreted by the alpha cells of the islets of Langerhans. Glucagon acts mainly on the liver cells (hepatocytes) and stimulates glycogenolysis resulting in elevated blood sugar (hyperglycemia). Besides, it also stimulates the process of gluconeogenesis which also contributes to hyperglycemia. Further, it reduces cellular glucose uptake and utilisation.
