How Many Students Get IIT Admission? This is a common question that many aspirants have. In this article, we’ve tried to answer this question, and provided some information on the JEE exam, and the IITs.
Every year, thousands of students apply to IITs, but only a small percentage of those that apply are accepted. To get into IITs, an applicant must go through a screening process. Every year, thousands of candidates take the JEE Mains exam, with just around half of them qualifying for the JEE Advanced exam.
The first phase of JEE is JEE Mains, which will be held twice a year starting in 2019, once in January and once in April. There will be two papers in JEE Mains: Paper I and Paper II. JEE Advanced is the second exam phase, and candidates who score well in JEE Mains are eligible to take it.
Roughly 20,000 to 25,000 people qualify, but only 10,000 individuals are selected to attend one of the 23 IITs. As the number of IITs grows, so does the number of seats available. Candidates get admitted to IITs based on their JEE Advanced rank and the order in which the IITs are listed from top to bottom.
Scheduled tribes (SCs), Scheduled tribes (STs), and Other backward castes (OBCs) are all provided a quota of about 15%, 7.5 percent, and 27 percent, respectively. ST/SC/OBC candidates who account for 2% of the top ranks are guaranteed admission to the IITs. Female candidates are given separate seats proportional to the total number of seats allocated by each IIT. The criteria include 20 percent of the seats for female students.
The syllabus for JEE Main 2022 is identical to the previous year’s. However, in light of decisions made by several boards across India, the NTA has determined that the Question Paper shall contain a total of 90 questions, with applicants being required to attempt only 75 of them. For 15 extra questions, there would be no negative grading.

Every year, approximately 2.5 lakh students qualify for the JEE Advanced exam after clearing JEE Main. However, out of these, only about 16,000 to 17,000 students secure seats in IITs across India through the JoSAA counselling process. The number of seats is limited, making the competition extremely tough.
Each year, around 16,000 to 17,000 seats are available in IITs, including reserved seats for different categories like SC, ST, OBC, and EWS. This number includes seats for all B.Tech programs and other undergraduate courses across the 23 IITs in India.
Placement rates in IITs are generally very high. Around 85–90% of eligible students secure placements through campus recruitment. This percentage varies slightly across IITs and depends on the branch and demand in the job market. On average, over 10,000 students get placed annually, with many receiving offers from top companies in India and abroad.
Approximately 15,000–16,000 students graduate from IITs every year, completing their undergraduate or postgraduate programs. The number varies depending on the batch size, courses offered, and student retention rates.
The rank required to get into an IIT depends on the category, branch, and IIT you are aiming for. For top IITs like Bombay, Delhi, and Madras, a rank within 2,000 in JEE Advanced is generally needed for popular branches like Computer Science. For other branches or newer IITs, ranks up to 10,000–12,000 may also secure a seat.
