The NEET 2025 exam, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), is set for May 5. Registration for NEET 2025 closed on March. Reports indicate that more than 25 lakh medical students signed up for the exam, surpassing earlier expectations. This increase suggests there will likely be more candidates for NEET 2025 compared to previous years.
More than 2.5 million students have applied for the NEET exam this year, which is 420,000 more than last year. More than half of these applicants are girls. There are a total of 108,940 seats available in medical colleges across India. Since there are so many applicants, the NEET exam this year is expected to be very competitive. Knowing this, students preparing for the exam can understand the level of competition and plan their studies accordingly.
The deadline for registering for the NEET-UG 2025 exam has been extended to March 16, 2025. This year, more than 25 lakh students have applied, which is about 4.20 lakh more than last year.
Among the applicants, over 55% are female, with more than 1.3 lakh applications from female candidates. The NEET-UG exam offers around 2 lakh seats, including approximately 1,09,000 MBBS seats, 26,000 dental seats, and seats in other medical fields like Ayurveda, Veterinary Science, Homeopathy, and Nursing.
Many students are facing issues with registration, including problems linking Aadhar cards and mobile numbers. Some students are unable to link their old mobile numbers with Aadhar cards, and many don’t have PAN cards as an alternative. As a result, there have been requests to extend the registration deadline, which NTA has done to address these concerns.

The registration deadline for NEET UG 2025 has been extended to March 16, 2025. By March 8, 2025, over 25 lakh students had already registered for the exam, which is the highest number ever recorded. This year, the number of applicants has exceeded 25 lakh even before the final registration date, and it’s expected to increase further by March 16, 2025. Last year, 20.87 lakh students registered for the exam. NEET is the entrance exam for both government and private medical colleges in India.
One notable trend is the significant increase in the number of female applicants. Over 25 lakh students have registered for the exam, which is an increase of about 4.20 lakh from last year. More than 55% of the applicants are females.
In 2022, almost 18.72 lakh students signed up for the NEET exam. This year, Uttar Pradesh has the most applicants with around 3.23 lakh students. Maharashtra comes next with 2.69 lakh candidates, followed closely by Rajasthan with about 1.9 lakh applicants. Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have around 1.49 lakh and 1.47 lakh applications, respectively. In Delhi, 65,809 students applied for the exam. These numbers show that lots of students across India are interested in taking the NEET exam, and Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of registrations for 2025.
