The tie-breaking criteria for NEET UG, or the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate, play a crucial role in determining the merit rank of candidates who achieve the same score in the examination. Earlier, this was the tie-breaking criteria for NEET UG. According to the tie-breaking rules in place until NEET-UG 2023, the scores in biology (zoology and botany), chemistry, and physics were taken into account, and were prioritized in that sequence.
For example, let’s say two candidates, A and B, have scored the same marks in NEET UG 2025. Candidate A scored higher in Biology, securing a higher rank than Candidate B. However, if both candidates have the same marks in Biology, their marks in Chemistry will be compared. If both candidates scored same marks in Chemistry, their Physics marks shall be compared. However, if the tie persists, the older candidate will be ranked higher in merit.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has issued new tie-breaker policy for NEET UG 2025 to ensure fairness and transparency in the admission process. In case two or more candidates secure the same score in NEET UG 2025, the tie-breaking criteria come into play to determine the merit rank. According to the notification, there will be a change in prioritization criteria, going forward. Marks obtained in Physics will be given the first priority, followed by Chemistry and Biology.
This differs from the current practice, where marks in Biology are prioritized, followed by Chemistry and then Physics. In the event of a tie persisting, eligible candidates will be randomly selected through an automated computer-based draw, without any manual intervention. These regulations will be effective starting from the NEET UG Exam 2025.
The tie-breaking criteria are as follows:
In case of two or more candidates obtaibibg equal marks/percentile scores in the NEET (UG)-2025, the inter-se-merit shall be determined as follows:
a. Candidate obtaining higher marks in Biology (Botany& Zoology) in the Test, followed by,
b. Candidate obtaining higher marks in Chemistry in the Test, followed by,

d. Draw of lots by using the computer or IT with no human intervention.
