Do you aspire to be an IITian? Are you preparing for the JEE Advanced 2023 exam? If yes, then this news is crucial for you. The National Testing Agency (NTA), the body responsible for conducting the JEE exams, has announced significant changes regarding the eligibility criteria for JEE Advanced. Specifically, the IITs have decided to reinstate the pre-pandemic performance criteria for Class 12 marks, which had been relaxed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Before the pandemic, candidates applying to IITs were required to score a minimum of 75% in Class 12 or be among the top 20 percentile in their respective board exams to be eligible for admission into BTech programs. Candidates from the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) categories were required to score at least 65% in Class 12 or meet the 20 percentile requirement. Simply qualifying in JEE Advanced did not guarantee admission if a candidate did not meet the Class 12 marks criteria.
However, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the IITs had relaxed these requirements to accommodate the disruptions caused by the pandemic. During this period, they allowed candidates to apply with only passing marks in Class 12, even as their board exams were either canceled or delayed. This flexibility remained in place until 2022.
With the situation returning to normalcy, the IITs have decided to revoke the pandemic-era relaxations. For JEE Advanced 2023, candidates will once again need to meet the pre-pandemic eligibility criteria, which include a minimum of 75% marks in Class 12 or ranking in the top 20 percentile of their board exams. This rule will apply to all candidates, including those from the SC/ST categories, who are required to achieve at least 65% marks in Class 12.
This means that, for the first time in three years, Class 12 board exam performance will play a crucial role in determining whether a candidate is eligible for JEE Advanced, in addition to their performance in the JEE Main exam.
For JEE Main 2023, candidates must have passed or be currently pursuing their Class 12 exams with mandatory subjects such as Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, and optionally Biology. Approximately 2.5 lakh students are selected each year to qualify for JEE Advanced based on their performance in JEE Main.
There is no upper age limit for appearing in JEE Mains. Students who passed their Class 12 exams in 2021, 2022, or are scheduled to appear in 2023 are eligible to take the JEE Main exam. However, candidates must meet the specific age eligibility requirements of the institutions they plan to apply to.
While there has been no official announcement regarding the JEE Main 2023 exam date or the registration schedule, reports suggest that these details will be released soon. The official notification will be available on the NTA website (@nta.ac.in), and candidates can register for the exam on the JEE Main official portal (@jeemain.nta.nic.in).
