One part is filled with an ideal gas at pressure P and temperature T, whereas the other part is completely evacuated. If the valve is suddenly opened, the pressure and temperature of the gas will be :

Solution

It is a free expansion of gas so W = 0. As walls are insulating so
$Q = 0, therefore ∆ U = 0 \Rightarrow T = constant So, P_{1} V_{1} = P_{2} V_{2} \Rightarrow P_{f} = \frac{P_{i}}{2}$
