Kinetic theory of ideal gases
Question

A flask contains hydrogen and helium in the ratio 2 : 1 by mass. The temperature of the mixture is 27oC. Obtain the ratio of rms speeds of the molecules of the two gases. Molecular mass of hydrogen = 2, molecular mass of helium = 4.

Easy
Solution

Average KE of the molecule =12mvrms2
For hydrogen, 12mHvH2=32kT      …(1)
For helium, 12mHevHe2=32kT     …(2)
So,  vH2vHe2=MHeMH=42=2
Or,  vHvHe=2:1.
