A man can row a boat at a velocity of 10 m/s in still water. Speed of water in the river is 5 m/s. If the man wishes to cross the river in the minimum possible time, the drift produced is [width of river = 1 km]

Solution

If the man wishes to cross the river in the minimum possible time, then he should row the boat in a direction perpendicular to the direction of motion.
$∴ t_{\min} = \frac{d}{V_{b / ω}}$
$∴ {Drift = BC = V}_{ω} \times t_{\min} = 5 \times \frac{1000}{10} m = 500 m$
