Mean free path

Question

The mean free path of nitrogen molecules at a pressure of 1 atm and temperature 0ºC  is  0.8×107m. If the number density of molecules is  2.7×1025  per  m3, then the  molecular diameter is  3.2×N  Ao. Find N.

Moderate
Solution

λ=12πnd2

d=12πλn=12π0.8×10-72.7×1025

Substituting the values, we get,

d=0.32×109m=3.2Ao
