Divide both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor. It simplifies the fraction.
Example:
12/16 = 3/4
Let's solve:

1/3 + 1/4
Step 1: Find the Least Common Multiple (LCM) of 3 and 4.
LCM = 12
Step 2: Convert both fractions.
1/3 = 4/12
1/4 = 3/12
Step 3: Add the numerators.
4 + 3 = 7
Answer = 7/12
Decimals are another way of writing fractions whose denominators are 10, 100, 1000, and so on.
For example:
0.5 = 5/10 = 1/2
0.75 = 75/100 = 3/4
Each digit after the decimal point has its own place value.
For example, in 4.582:
Fraction to Decimal:
3/4 = 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75
Decimal to Fraction:
0.6 = 6/10 = 3/5
Example:
2.5 × 1.2
Step 1: Ignore decimal points.
25 × 12 = 300
Step 2: Count decimal places.
2.5 has 1 decimal place.
1.2 has 1 decimal place.
Total = 2 decimal places.
Step 3: Place the decimal.
Answer = 3.00 = 3
Students should become comfortable with the four basic operations.
Example:
2/3 × 5/7 = 10/21
Line up decimal points before adding or subtracting.
Example:
4.25 + 2.5 = 6.75
For multiplication and division, carefully count decimal places.
To compare fractions:
3/4 and 5/8
Convert to a common denominator:
3/4 = 6/8
Since 6/8 > 5/8,
3/4 is greater.
To compare decimals:
0.45 and 0.405
Write as:
0.450 and 0.405
So, 0.450 > 0.405.
