Every year, lakhs of students in India appear for the NEET exam with the dream of becoming a doctor. Among all the options available, government medical colleges are the most preferred choice for MBBS aspirants. The main reason is that government colleges provide high-quality medical education at very affordable fees, along with good hospital training and experienced faculty. Because of these benefits, competition for government MBBS seats through NEET is always very high.
The NEET 2026 exam will be the main entrance test for students who want admission to MBBS courses in government medical colleges across India. After the exam results are declared, seats are allotted through a counselling process based on the student’s NEET rank, category, and preferences. Some seats are filled through the All India Quota (AIQ) counselling conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), while the remaining seats are filled through state counselling authorities.
India has a large number of government medical colleges spread across different states and union territories. However, the number of colleges and MBBS seats is different in each state. Some states like Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Gujarat have many government medical colleges and a higher number of MBBS seats. On the other hand, smaller states and union territories may have only one or two government medical colleges.
In recent years, the Government of India has also increased the number of medical colleges and MBBS seats to meet the growing demand for doctors in the country. As a result, thousands of new seats have been added in government medical colleges across different states.
Understanding the state-wise distribution of government MBBS seats through NEET 2026 is very helpful for students during the counselling process. It helps them know how many seats are available in each state and make better decisions while choosing colleges.

The Government of India has introduced reservation policies to provide opportunities to students from different backgrounds.
