What Are Roman Numerals?

Today, Roman numerals are still used in various contexts such as clock faces, book chapters, movie sequels, royal titles, and important events like the Olympic Games and Super Bowl.

How Roman Numerals Work

Roman numerals are based on a combination of the following letters:

  • I = 1
  • V = 5
  • X = 10
  • L = 50
  • C = 100
  • D = 500
  • M = 1000

Rules:

  • Symbols are added when placed in descending order: X + I = XI (11)

Basic Rules to Interpret Roman Numerals

  • In Roman numerals, when a larger letter comes before a smaller one, their values are added. Example: CL – C (100) + L (50) = 150
  • When a smaller letter comes before a larger one, it indicates subtraction. Example: XC – C (100) - X (10) = 90
  • If a letter is repeated, its values are added together. Example: II – I (1) + I (1) = 2

However, the same letter cannot be repeated more than three times in a row, as per Roman numeral conventions.
