Awadh, Bengal and Hyderabad rose independently, but there were some standard features of their independence. First, although many of the larger states were created by former Mughal aristocrats, they were apprehensive of the administrative systems they had inherited, particularly the jagirdari system. Second, they employed various tax collection tactics. Rather than depending on state officials, all three regimes contracted with revenue farmers to collect taxes.
