Doordarshan, a mass communication channel, began in 1959.
On September 15, 1959, the Government of India established Doordarshan (DD for short), an Indian public broadcaster, in Delhi. Beginning as an experiment in a small 5KW transmitter and a makeshift studio, DD became a national broadcaster in 1982. Doordarshan is an Indian public broadcaster funded by the Government of India and owned by one of the two divisions of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Prasar Bharati. One of India's largest broadcast organisations in terms of studios and broadcast infrastructure. Television services were expanded to Bombay and Amritsar in 1972. By 1975, only seven cities in India provided television services, and Doordarshan was the only television provider in India. Television service was separated from the radio on April 1, 1976.
