Hickey was the editor of the Bengal Gazette, a weekly magazine. He started to write in 1780. This magazine described itself as a commercial paper open to all but influenced by none. In this magazine, the content was not to spread news or rumours. The content of this magazine was related to the import and sales of enslaved people and lots of advertisements. It was a private publication which was free from colonialism. In this magazine, Hickey also published some entertaining rumours about officials of the English Company.
