The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act was initiated in 2005 as a successor to the National Food For Work Program, or NFFWP, in 2004. NFFWP aims at intensifying the generation of wage employment. It was initially started in the 150 most backward regions of the nation. It was introduced as a 100% centrally planned scheme. The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act intends to enhance the livelihood security of people from rural areas by giving them employment for 100 days in a financial year in a rural household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work.
