Kusum and palash were the flowers used by the tribals to dye clothes and colour leather. Tribal people gathered food from the forest and hunted animals to survive in many parts of India. For them, forests were vital to survival. Such a group lived in the forests of Orissa, and they were known as the Khonds. They frequently went on group hunts and consumed fruits and forest-gathered roots. They sold forest goods in the neighbourhood markets and used a variety of forest plants and herbs for medicinal purposes. When local weavers and leather craftsmen required supplies of kusum and palash flowers to colour their textiles and leather, they went to the Khonds.
