Textile and paper money were used in Japan to print pictures. The printing technique was invented in ancient China as a way to print on textiles, and subsequently on paper. Around AD 768–770, printing was first used in Japan. Textiles, playing cards, and paper money, all had images printed on them. The printing of visual materials gave rise to intriguing publishing techniques like setting up meetings at tea houses and creating libraries and bookstores. A style of art known as Ukiyo, or the portrayal of typical human situations, particularly urban, was also introduced.
