Detailed Solution

Aerobic and anaerobic respiration are two types of cellular respiration, the process by which cells generate energy from the food they consume.

Aerobic respiration, which occurs in the mitochondria of cells, requires the presence of oxygen. It is a slower but more efficient process that generates a significant amount of energy, known as ATP.

Anaerobic respiration, on the other hand, occurs in the absence of oxygen and produces less ATP. When oxygen demand exceeds supply, it occurs in yeast and some bacteria, as well as in human muscle cells during intense exercise. Lactic acid is produced during this process, which can cause fatigue and muscle soreness.
