Russia, Germany, England, and Austria-Hungary had a strong interest in the Balkans, but Switzerland and Japan did not have an interest in the area of the Balkans. The countries that became interested in the Balkans for their benefit, like Russia, wanted to extend their territory and navy by moving into the Balkans. In 1912, Russia helped the Balkans in the first war of the Balkans with Turkey to take Macedonia away from Turkey.
