Tarabai and Pandita Ramabai wrote about the miserable plight of women. Since the 1860s, many Bengali women writers have written books highlighting women's experiences of women being confined at home, held in ignorance, forced to do heavy housework, abused and treated unfairly by the men they served. In the 1880s, Tarabai Shinde and Pandita Ramabai wrote with raging anger about the miserable lives of upper-class Hindu women, especially widows. Tamil writers have also shown the pitiful condition of the woman. The emancipation of women formed the main focus of social reform and included issues such as child marriage, the plight of widows, and education.
