Viceroy Irwin announced a vague offer of ‘Dominion Status’ for India in 1929. The Simon Commission faced backlash from the Indian political leaders as it was a white commission, and no Indian was a member of it. On its arrival, Simon Commission was greeted with the slogan “Go Back, Simon”. All parties were opposed to it, including Congress and the Muslim League. So, the then viceroy of India, Lord Irwin, presented a vague offer of ‘Dominion Status’ and round table conferences to discuss the future discourse. But it did not bear fruit and the Congress, in its Lahore Session of 1929, put forward their demand of ‘Purna Swaraj’.
