Miniatures are small-sized paintings, generally done in watercolour on cloth or paper. This was a tradition that evolved in a variety of ways. Miniatures are miniature watercolour paintings, usually done on fabric or paper. The very first miniatures were made from palm leaves or wood. Some of the most beautiful examples were discovered in western India and used to depict Jaina's writings. The Mughal monarchs Akbar, Jahangir, and Shah Jahan, commissioned highly competent painters to illustrate historical narratives and poetry in manuscripts. These were usually brightly coloured and featured court scenes, war scenes, hunting scenes, and other facets of social life. They were regularly traded as gifts; only a few people saw them, including the Emperor and his close allies.
